Household Income and Expenditure Survey

The 2019-20 Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) is one of the national representative surveys that is always conducted by the Fiji Bureau of Statistics (FBoS) on a five-year interval. The main objectives of the survey are to provide household income and consumption data that will be used to update the poverty rate of the country, update the basket and weights for the Consumer Price Index (CPI), contribute to the development of the national accounts as well as providing the necessary baseline socio-economic indicators for further analysis and research purposes.

The survey was conducted in a 12-month period and was divided into 4 sub-rounds of data collection. A representative sample of 6,000 households were randomly selected from a sample of 600 Enumeration Areas [EAs] covering the whole country. The survey was conducted in the period February 2019 to February 2020 before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in Fiji.
